A new delivery of TWear is coming this year! You already know the classic O HOOR., okdoei, Hogwarts houses and Humantitties TWear, but we might miss an amazing design that you have come up with. So do you have a great linguistics joke or a T.W.I.S.T. related phrase that we should definitely use for the new TWear? Then send your high-resolution design to email@example.com before the 12th of February!
The 14th Student Conference in Linguistics will take place on April 17th and 18th. The theme is ‘Lost In Language’. Are you a BA/MA/PhD student studying linguistics or doing language-related research? And do you want to share your thesis, paper, or project with a community of fellow students in a 20-minute talk? Submit your abstract now!
In order to give our first-years a warm welcome, T.W.I.S.T. organises two weeks of special activities! First-years can enjoy a free lunch on the 12th of September, the First-Years’ TWeekend from the 13th to the 15th of September, a boat tour on the 18th of September and, as the cherry on top, a dinner at restaurant VIP before we go and sing karaoke!
For any details, check the monthly newsletter or the events in our Facebook group!
Are you and international that’s going to study (or is still going to be studying) Linguistics in Leiden next year? T.W.I.S.T. offers you a chance to get a Dutch buddy that helps you out with all your questions!
This buddy, an (enthusiastic) member of our association, can help you out with important matters, study-related questions or other difficulties. Other than that, your buddy can also be your guide into the Dutch studentlife full of parties and other fun activities! You and your buddy get matched by both of your preferences, to be filled in on our buddy matching form.
Interested? Fill in the matching form before the 2nd of September, and we’ll match you with a buddy before the classes start!
Dear (future) linguist,
Would you like to learn even more about linguistics and meet new people along the way? Then you should join Study Association T.W.I.S.T.!
T.W.I.S.T. is a study association run by and for students of linguistics in Leiden. We organise many activities, both related and unrelated to linguistics. Activities related to linguistics include those such as lectures, museum visits, and a yearly linguistic conference with all kinds of speakers ranging from BA students to academics. Some examples of activities unrelated to linguistics are the first-years weekend, the weekly high-tea, “borrels”, parties, pub quizzes, dinners, and game nights. These activities are a lot of fun and many friendships are formed every year.
Another advantage of membership is the discount on your linguistics books. T.W.I.S.T. has made a deal with Athenaeum Bookstore in Amsterdam, which means that you can get a 10 % discount on Dutch study books and 15 % on study books in other languages! As a member of T.W.I.S.T., you can also receive a member card, with which you can get a discount on the purchase of other books at Athenaeum.
Our study association also offers many other cool things. T.W.I.S.T. has its own magazine: the
TWISTER. The TWISTER is published 4 times a year and contains interviews, puzzles and short
linguistic articles written by students. The association also organises career events and provides
information regarding specialisations and electives. Another thing T.W.I.S.T. takes pride in, is the
yearly trip abroad to explore the language and culture of another country in Europe and have a great time with each other.
Starting from the academic year 2018-2019, there is a buddy system within T.W.I.S.T. for
international students. Internationals can apply to be matched with a buddy, a T.W.I.S.T. member
who has volunteered to take an international under their wing and help them get used to studying in the Netherlands. They can answer questions about living in Leiden, go to activities with you, and even practice your Dutch with you if you like.
14 until 16 September T.W.I.S.T. organises a first-years weekend. Come join us on this weekend to get to know your fellow students! When you sign up for T.W.I.S.T., you can immediately sign up for this fun weekend as well.
By becoming a member of T.W.I.S.T. you can join us in many entertaining activities and make new
friends among students of linguistics. If you want, you can also join a committee to help organise our events and make T.W.I.S.T. an even more fun and entertaining place.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at one of our activities!

With 4 keynote lectures and many more student talks, we strive to bring together students interested in language from the most diverse research fields and subdisciplines.
